Tamil is an Indian language spoken in south-eastern coastal India, particularly in the state of Tamil Nadu, and is also spoken in northern Sri Lanka, formerly called Ceylon. The language is written in its own Tamil script. Christianity was brought by the Portuguese in the sixteenth century. In 1554 Tamil was the first Indian language to have its Bible (the Cardila) printed in Europe, at Lisbon with Romanised Tamil script. Another version was published in 1914. Bible work is done by the Bible Society of India.
