Khmer, also called Cambodian, is spoken by over fifteen million people mainly in the Kingdom of Cambodia (Kampuchea). Khmer is written in its own unique Khmer script. Christianity was first brought to Cambodia by Roman Catholic missionaries in 1517. Christians in Cambodia are Catholic and evangelical Protestant. The Bible was translated into Khmer by Rev Arthur Hammond and first published in Khmer in 1954 and is called the Old Version (OV) or Hammond Version. The Khmer Standard Version was produced in 2005. Bible work is done by the Bible Society in Cambodia, who also produced a Common Language version.
