Bulgarian New Testament
The Bulgarian New Testament, old version, was published by the Bible Society in 1923. It is the Protestant churches' standard New Testament text.
Bulgarian is spoken in the European state of Bulgaria. It is a Slavonic language written in Cyrillic letters. The Bulgar language is very similar to the Macedonian language. Bulgaria adopted Christianity in AD 863. Upto the nineteenth century the Bulgarian Church used the Church Slavonic Bible. The Bulgarian Orthodox Old Testament includes the deuterocanonical books of the Slavonic tradition.
The Scriptures were first translated as the Gospel of Matthew into modern Bulgarian in 1823, the New Testament in 1840 and the Bible in full in 1871 called the Constantinople Bible, and revised in 1891. The translation was revised in 1923 and 1940. Most of the Christians are affiliated to the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, and there are evangelical Protestant and Catholic minorities.
Bible work is done by the Bulgarian Bible Society. In 2002 a new translation was produced. Bibles are produced in Protestant and Orthodox editions.
