afrikaans

Afrikaans is spoken in South Africa, especially in the Western Cape, originally by descendants of the Dutch settlers (Boers) who first came in 1652, bringing the Gereformeerde Kerk (Reformed Church). The language, is written in Latin (Roman) letters, and derives from Dutch. Most of Afrikaans speaking Christians are Protestant, mainly of the Reformed tradition. The first part of the Scriptures to be translated into Afrikaans, then called Cape Dutch, was Gospel of Mark in 1878. The Afrikaaner used the Dutch Bible until the first full Afrikaans Bible (Die Bybel) was produced in 1933 (Ou Vertaling), and revised in 1953. A Nuwe Vertaling (new translation) was produced in 1983 called Die Bybel vir Almal.

Bible work is done by the Bible Society of South Africa (Bybelgenootskap van Suid Afrika).
